Statement
My
earliest memories are of colour, first, and pattern. I remember being
surrounded by exotic, beautiful, luxurious and then, seemingly mysterious
objects that held fascination and kidnapped my imagination. My work
constantly refers to the cherished and remembered olde worlde objects of
which I have become a collector.
In
those formative years, I developed a strong sense of belonging - to
family, to place, to history and, more recently, to the ancient land in
which I live. My work has to do with modern veneers falling away to reveal
layer upon layer of rich cultural existence. Frequent references are made
to other times, other cultures and to collectables and antiques.
With
the viewer I share my female perspective; that of an internal, interior
view always looking outwards, striving for that deeper sense of meaning
and understanding.
Part
of my present journey involves interpreting ‘the country’, rather than
depicting the traditional Western view of landscape. This is derived from
my sojourns in the Northern Territory, particularly, Alice Springs.
My
work extols the beauty, richness, exotic and erotic, sensuous nature of my
own, and the broader world. It is a celebration of life.
