Ricky Handy was born in Mildura in 1972 of Barkindji parents. The Barkindji people lived along the Darling River in N.S.W. and apart from a couple of years in Sydney and Broken Hill, Ricky has lived in Mildura all his life.

Ricky first developed an interest in art whilst studying a Certificate in Aboriginal Art and Design at Sunraysia Institute of Tafe in Mildura in 1998. He developed a particular interest in the technique of printmaking, more so woodcuts and printing from wooden boards in which he engraves the surface.
