Bio
Marie
was born in Prague, Czech Republic, where she graduated from two Czech
Universities, Palacky University in Olomouc, M Art Ed, and Charles
University in Prague, Dr Art Ed. She came to Australia in 1969 from
Czechoslovakia as a political refugee, following the Russian invasion.
Marie was a full-time art and photography teacher for over twenty years
in Australia and in a number of different countries in Europe and Asia.
She taught in a number of Australian High Schools and Colleges and
worked as an Artist in residence in Primary schools (Master Teacher from
1976), and has been the recipient of seven government grants. She has
visited and lived in a number of countries around the world, and worked
as an Art Educator in European and Asian countries which has included
work for Save the Children Fund.
She has participated in fifty group exhibitions, some in Australia and
some overseas, and has held twelve solo exhibitions. These have included
weaving, painting, printing and photography. In May 2002 she was NAVA’s
Profile Artist on The Visual Arts Network.
Most of her work is in Mixed Media and she has a special interest in old
photographic processes as an art form. By using hand made paper, canvas,
wood or glass which she coats herself with silver gelatine emulsion, and
then employing paint after exposure and development, she feels closer to
the subject matter she concerns herself with at the time of creating the
work. Her current work involves a combination of previous techniques
plus scanning, digital manipulation and printing on watercolour paper. A
favourite is using a hundred years old “printing out process”, where
photographic paper is exposed to sun until the image is clearly visible.
This process helps her create images of fascinating tonal texture.
She is a member of NAVA, PhotoAccess, Eurobodalla Photographic Club,
South Coast Pastel Society, Enquentro and Photomedia Group Alchemy. In
1997 Marie was the originator of the group that became in 2000
MultiFocus and in 2005 MultiFocus Photomedia Artists Inc. Between 1998 -
2005 she was, as a member of MultiFocus, a joint recipient of number of
grants from artsACT and the ACT Office of Multicultural and Community
Affairs, and also in 2001 from ACT Heritage and in 2000 from Nava (Pat
Corrigan grant).
Marie still travels extensively. She regularly returns to Prague and
uses that location as a base for excursions to other parts of Europe,
studying and absorbing both the history of art and new developments. On
the way to and fro she makes sure to have extended stopovers in Asia or
the Americas to broaden the experience. Recently she participated in a
workshop in painting in Italy, and a private master class in the Czech
Republic.
Marie currently lives between the pristine bushland of a national park
and the sea. The close proximity to the beauty and occasional harshness
of nature inspires her imagination and uplifts her spirits.

Artist’s Statement
Exhibition in The Art Vault Mildura
Marie’s work is about the mystery of changes in the life circle, the
transience in life; about seasons and time passing by.
The door handles and key holes
Through her life, she says, she has been deeply dependent on the
memories of her childhood, those she loved and those she knew only from
the stories passed on to her. She returns occasionally to her place of
origin, visiting archives in Prague, Vienna or Silesia and photographing
what is left, be it three pears on the last tree left of her
grandfather’s orchard, where now is a busy metro station. The physical
remains of old abandoned buildings, crumbling doors, the old patina on
handles in her images reflect the nostalgia for the past and her
engagement with her surroundings in a both physical and emotional way.
Her images contain positive and negative symbols and the textural
changes of the subjects represent the alchemy of aging.
Surrounded by nature
The selection from her extensive collection of Sun prints and Photograms
represent her experimentation to find the perfect combination of subject
and the technology to capture the sense of place with respect for the
environment she lives in. They reflect her physical engagement with
nostalgic aspects of imagination by staining, hand-coating or
hand-colouring the prints and by this making them not reproducible.
The winter sun
The winter sun images correspond with her obscured, subluminal visions
as metaphors for states of being.
