Awards and Commissions
Martin
King was born in 1957 in Melbourne.
He studied Fine Art at Caulfield Institute of Technology, and at Sydney
College of the Arts and completed a Masters of Fine Art at Monash
University.
Martin has over 40 solo exhibitions throughout Australia and has
exhibited in many group exhibitions both in Australia and
Internationally. In 2006 he was awarded the Broken Hill Outback Art
Award and in 2003 was awarded the McGivern Art Prize at the Maroondah
Art Gallery in Melbourne. He was awarded Third prize at the 3rd Kochi
International Triennial of prints in Japan in 1999, and an Honorable
Mention for his work at the Bharat Bhavan International Print Biennale
in India. He won the Artist Book Prize at the Fremantle Print Award in
1997.
In 2005 King traveled to South Georgia Island – sub Antarctica, and in
2006 was an artist in residency in Broken Hill, a desert region in
outback Australia. These environments have inspired much of his recent
work concerning wildlife
He has lectured in Art schools around the Australia since graduating in
1980 and since 1994 he has been senior printer at the Australian Print
Workshop in Melbourne.
He has worked with many of Australia’s leading artists, and has a wide
experience working with artists in many Aboriginal art communities
around the country.
Martin is represented many collections including the British Museum,
London, Carleton College Library, Minnesota, USA National Gallery of
Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of NSW, Art Gallery
of S.A, Museums and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Regional
galleries, University, Corporate and private collections
