Artist Statement

The ever-changing light on the landscape, the feeling of a place, atmospheric subjective clouds and weather conditions, are documented on my canvases.

I am inspired to paint by the unconventional beauty and vastness of the remote landscapes I see around me:  By the mood that can be evoked by weather, and by atmospheric conditions, contrast and colour created by could and light.

What most often moves me to paint is, literally, a passing glance as I am driving.  I begin an artwork with travel and photography; I photograph anything that inspires me to want to paint.  In my studio, I combine this with memory and imagination.  I endeavour to create dramatic canvases that imply the magnitude of nature and weather events and create a window into another world.

Paint is often quickly applied to create freshness.  Blurred outline allows one form to merge with another and always leaves something to the imagination of the viewer.  Graduation of tone obscures sharp edges and creates synergy between light and shadow.  I use oils because they are best able to convey the atmosphere and emotion that I want to portray.  I often use classical composition but sometimes exaggerate the proportion and colour to convey a particular mood.

I want the viewer to feel that they are present in the intensity of the moment and feel a connection to another place and time.  I want people to contemplate the mysteries within the painting.  My paintings evoke feelings of quiet contemplation, longing, isolation, and intrigue and overall an empathy for a place.
