‘LANDSCAPE PAINTINGS, NEAR AND FAR’
2010, Art Vault, Mildura
The exhibition ‘Landscape paintings, near and far’ celebrates landscapes
that for me have been places of inspiration and restoration.
Being a Sydney based painter these landscapes are from various locations
in NSW, as well as my recent place of abode, the harbour suburb of
Vaucluse in Sydney, to places of pilgrimage such as India and Greece.
Landscapes become places that can permeate the soul, being present in
ones memory and informing the heart.
These paintings exhibited are sketches on paper, canvas and board, as
well as sketch books that act as initial ideas for larger works, and a
resource for further developments as I will undertake during my month
residency at Art Vault in Mildura.
During my residency I will produce a series of abstracted landscape
paintings that start from similar sketches produced outdoors in order to
observe the shifting light, colour and composition. These works will
then be refined to essential abstracted forms.
In abstracting the landscape I endeavour to extract and infuse the works
with a monumental simplicity and an expression of the poetics of place.
“…an ode to the restorative powers of nature.
Though absent long,
These forms of beauty have not been to me,
As is a landscape to a blind man’s eye:
But oft, in lonely rooms, and ‘mid the din
Of towns and cities, I have owed to them,
In hours of weariness, sensations sweet…
With tranquil restoration. “
William Wordsworth, from the ‘Art of Travel’ by Alain de Botton
