Institute, New York City
1971
Born in Melbourne. Lives and works in Sydney
Jason
Benjamin (1971- ), Australian painter. Won the 2005 peoples choice award
at the Archibald Prize with a painting of actor Bill Hunter. He won the
1993, 1994 and 1996 Mosman Art Prizes in Sydney. (Taken from Wikipedia).
'Benjamin
does not limit himself to a particular genre, undertaking still lifes,
revealing portraits and vast landscapes. His paintings feel easily
recognisable, partly due to their size - they are more than a metre wide
and up to two metres high - but also to their photographic quality. They
are often close-ups and "a bid to capture the moment", prompted
by the human instinct to try to keep hold of "a collection of
moments, scenes, memories that can't be held".' (Taken from Upfront,
The Art Oracle by Micheal Reid)
