I
was born in the Netherlands in 1940 and migrated with my family to
Australia when I was eleven.
I have always drawn, and art was my first choice of education.
Teacher training followed, and I taught in primary and secondary
schools, studied again, and taught at TAFE and university for twenty or so
years.
I have a studio at Nichols Point, and still draw and paint with
pleasure.
While I enjoy abstract design, it is ‘reality’ that most
intrigues me.
It interests me that art is unreal, while appearing very realistic.
Art is a bizarre playground where you can create paintings of
paintings, such as the increasingly complex series: ‘Hero and Dolly are
caught in the Witch-artist’s Maze’.
Even
when my work is spare, I like it to have attitude,
and appear to interact with the viewer.
Many of my subjects have eyes, for example, the car in Raincloud
has sly cartoon eyes.
A recent series called ‘Otherwise’ shows elaborately painted
figurines (dolls and dogs etc) acting dramatically.
These creatures came from a 2006 Artback
trip to Silverton, which has an old-wares shop, and I began to draw them
in settings as if they were at an alternate artists’ camp, then brought
them home – and I have not yet run out of scenarios with them as stars.
Even when their eyes are broken off, they still have attitude
when placed in their other-world. 2010 2008 2007 2006 2005 2004 2003 2001 2000 1999 1998 1997 1996 1995 Pre 1995 Many exhibitions, solo and collective, and prize-winning paintings, the first of which was Burning Off, a shared first prize, when we first came to Mildura. 2000 - M A by
